CONTRACT AND THEN
RELAX ALL MUSCLES
Whether or not we’re aware of it, we accumulate lots of tension in our bodies throughout each day. From the first jump when the alarm goes off to the frustration of seeking a lost sock, locating misplaced car keys, or dealing with whatever else goes on in the morning, all of these “tensions” accumulate and tense up muscles, usually without us even noticing.
It’s so easy to neglect these little irritants, but if you do, they build up one on top of another—like layers of dust or soot—eventually becoming one big ball of tension. To avoid this, I’ve found the following quick exercise to be a wonderful stress releaser: while either sitting, standing, or lying down, contract all of your muscles as if tensing every cell and molecule in your body. After holding yourself completely taut for at least 20 seconds, suddenly let go and feel how all of your tension has just been flushed out.
There are no limitations on the frequency of doing this stress releaser. You may do it during any private moments available to you throughout the day. It can be done so speedily and quickly that you can practice it almost anywhere.
Naturally, if you’re in the middle of a conversation with someone—unless that discussion is over the phone and the person on the other end is in the middle of a long monologue—you probably won’t want to do this around other people. If you do so, they may become alarmed at the grimace on your face! However, you should have plenty of opportunities—remember to add this stress releaser to your daily routine.
